What Is A Franna Crane?
AMAC Cranes • Feb 18, 2022

While the term 'Franna crane' is well-known in the construction industry, it isn't used widely by the general public. In basic terms, a Franna crane is a cross between a crane and a truck and is made specifically to operate over most surfaces.

General mobile cranes are built to operate safely on stabilised, hard surfaces for optimum efficiency, but Franna cranes can perform the tasks of a mobile crane on uneven and/or soft terrain or surfaces. This makes a Franna crane ideal for agricultural work, or operations in the mining, construction, earthworks, and civil engineering industries.

The history of the Franna crane

Created right here in Australia in the 1980s, the Franna crane was first designed by Australian engineer, Dave Francis. He envisioned a pick-and-carry crane and brought the image to life using truck components.

The term 'Franna' came from the name of Francis' company, which he made using a combination of his name (Francis) and his daughter's name (Anna). 'Franna' seems like such a strange name for a crane, until one hears this story. If you hadn't heard the term before, don't be too concerned, it's not widely used by the public.

Francis sold his business in 1983 and Lou Parolin and Brisan Haintook began mass-producing pick-and-carry cranes based on Francis' revolutionary design. Due to the convenience of high speed and its ability to travel over rough terrain with ease, this design finally gained popularity in Australia.

Despite Terex taking over the company in 1999 and changing the name of the crane to 'Terex-Franna', these unmatched cranes are still known as Franna cranes.

Franna crane pros

Designed for road travel, this cross between a truck and a crane reduces the need to hire an abundance of extra equipment or machinery for the transportation of large goods.

Hiring a Franna crane reduces the time needed to set up the extra machinery and/or equipment because they don't require stabilisers.

Its versatility and efficiency save on time, money, and labour, and the safety of being able to maneuver multiple terrains with ease makes this piece of machinery a one of a kind in the industry.

Franna cranes range from a lifting capacity of 10 tonnes to 25 tonnes, making them effective for both small and large scale projects. Whether you're looking to cater for residential work or commercial projects, this crane has you covered.

Some common tasks where a Franna crane shines include agricultural work, construction (especially those considered tight or in less than ideal locations), civil engineering, unloading ships or trucks, earthworks, and lifts necessary in smaller spaces where a general crane is not suited to.
