How to choose the right crane for your project
AMAC Cranes • Jun 17, 2021

Cranes are used for a huge range of projects of all scales and sizes. From large-scale construction projects to simple lifting jobs, crane hire is an important part of many projects. But one crane does not suit all jobs: different types of crane are a good fit for different projects, and for various reasons.

What to consider before choosing a crane

There are many factors to consider when choosing a crane for your project. First, the scale of the job, as well as the amount of space your crane will be operating in. Bigger cranes can be a more efficient choice on large projects, but they also need sufficient space for safe operation. At AMAC Cranes, we can help you to determine which type of crane is best for your needs by considering the type and scope of your project and matching you up with your perfect crane from our wide range.

Tower cranes

Tower cranes are ideal for major construction projects, where a long reach and a heavy lifting capacity are requirements for the job. Tower cranes are frequently used for the construction of multi-storey buildings, including apartment blocks and hotels. Tower cranes also allow access to a site even when there is congestion nearby, because of their generous reach and versatility.

Cranes for confined spaces

Some projects will require cranes that are very different from tower cranes, particularly when working in small, confined spaces. In these cases, construction managers will be looking for cranes that pack high levels of power and performance into a compact package. Look for a crane with an articulating frame that can navigate around small spaces, such as a Crawler crane. These cranes are useful in the construction of tunnels, or when relocating building materials and other machinery in small spaces.

Long reach cranes

For some projects, the most important consideration will be the crane's reach. In jobs where boom length is the most important factor, cranes with a long stick reach will be required. Cranes like this are often required in communications and telecoms projects, where a long reach will be needed to install antennae or other telecoms equipment. Tower cranes offer a long reach, but there are also smaller, mobile cranes that offer a long stick reach for smaller-scale projects too.

All terrain cranes

All terrain cranes are specially built with rubber tyres and outriggers that can stabilise the crane on uneven ground when it is lifting heavy loads. Rough terrain cranes are most commonly used in lifting and construction jobs that take place off-road, for example, agricultural construction work or lifting projects by the coast.
